Studies on Amino Acid Metabolism. Iii. Plasma Glycine Concentration and Hippuric Acid Formation following the Ingestion of Benzoate.
نویسندگان
چکیده
The conjugation of benzoic acid with glycine, resulting in the formation of hippuric acid, takes place in liver (1) and kidney (2). The urinary output of this conjugate after the administration of benzoate is used to measure this aspect of hepatic function (3). Theoretically, decreased hippuric acid formation may be due to hepatic and/or renal disease or to an inadequate supply of glycine. In this regard it is not clear to what extent this amino acid is available as such in the liver or is formed ad hoc, either in this organ or elsewhere. The present investigation was undertaken in the hope that data bearing on this question might be obtained.

The determination of individual amino acids in body fluids under pathological and experimental conditions should permit extension of information farther than is possible wit.h procedures that measure amino acids collectively. We are reporting some observations upon experimentally produced changes in the concentrations of glycine and alanine, as measured by chemical methods (1, 2) which are spec...
متن کاملBenzoylated Amino Acids in the Animal Organism. Iii. a Method for the Determination of Hippuric Acid* and a Study of the Synthesis of Hippuric Acid in Rabbits.? by Wendell H. Griffith
In 1877 Salkowski (1) noted the presence of a reducing substance in the urine of rabbits following the administration of sodium benzoate. Later Magnus-Levy (2) reported that this substance was benzoyl glycuronic acid and stated that less was found in the urine of rabbits than in the urine of dogs and sheep. At the present time it is the general assumption that rabbits detoxicate ingested benzoi...

The problem of the origin of the glycine available for hippuric acid synthesis after the administration of benzoic acid or its salts has been studied by many investigators with varying results. It should be borne in mind, in this connection, that all species of animals do not react similarly in response to the ingestion of benzoic acid. Thus the organisms of man (l), the rabbit (2), the goat (3...
متن کاملUrinary hippuric acid after ingestion of edible fruits.
Aim of this study was to evaluate the biotransformation of simple phenols after ingestion of edible fruits and mixed food. It was analyzed hippuric acid in urine as biomarker of conjugation in the liver cells of glycine with aromatic phenolic acids such benzoic and salicylic acid from ingested food. Measurement of hippuric acid in urine samples of 10 healthy individuals: 5 female and 5 male wit...
